Musical Director
Martin Scrimshaw

Martyn Ballarat

Martyn Scrimshaw started playing a brass instrument at the age of seven through The Salvation Army in London.  At the age of 12, Martyn moved to Australia with his family and played Tenor Horn with the Box Hill Salvation Army Youth Band doing tours of South Australia and NSW.

In 1986 he conducted his first Band, a small Salvation Army Ensemble in Rochester. In 1991 he auditioned for the position of Musical Director with the City of Traralgon Band. In the ten years he held the Baton, Martyn took the band from D Grade to B Grade missing out on the C Grade National Championships by half a point. During this time they won two Victorian State Championships and three South Australian Championships.

In 2001 as guest conductor for Moreland Brunswick Band in the A Grade South Australian Championships his band took out first place.

Based in Leongatha for fulltime work with The Salvation Army in 2002, Martyn took on the South Gippsland Shire Brass Band. Under his leadership they entered their first contest in many years and on their second attempt at the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod they took out first place. Their first win in a competition for over 50 years.

In 2011 he was moved to Bendigo and played in the Eaglehawk Citizens Band and then in 2013 after moving back to Leongatha took up the Baton with Traralgon once again. The band was the overall winner in the “C Grade” Section in the 2014 Victorian State Championships.

A note from Martin:

I am looking forward to my time with Diamond Valley and feel humbled that this band has invited me to be their Musical Director.
